I have been using the Brita refrigerator pitcher and really love it. The filters reduce lead, copper, chlorine (taste and odor) and mercury (plus other impurities.) It's very simple to use. You just need to replace the filter every 40 gallons or so. The filter is replaced by soaking in water for 15 minutes, popping out the old filter and popping in the new one! The water from the pitcher tastes really great and it is always nice and cold. One sneaky thing I like to do is use the water from the pitcher to fill ice cube trays. That way we have great tasting filtered-water cubes in our drinks too!
Want to try a pitcher yourself? If you take the Pledge to Reduce Bottled Water Waste at filterforgood.com, you can print a coupon for $5 off a Brita system or $1 off a filter after you pledge.
I want to say in the long run to reduce waste water filtration systems are better although the upfront costs are definitely higher.
