Our "Sustainable Materials" Luncheon at Ford (But Please Don't Eat Your Car!)

While visiting Ford earlier this week for the Forward with Ford press event, our most memorable meal was the luncheon inspired by the sustainable materials Ford is currently using or researching to make more eco-friendly auto parts. Ford has already incorporated many sustainable materials into production and continues to identify opportunities to use recycled or renewable material in place of nonrenewable virgin material. Some of the products already being used are:

• Soy-based polyurethane foams used for seat cushions, seatbacks and headliners
• Wheat straw and other plant fiber-reinforced plastic used for vehicle storage bins and interior door panels
• Engineering wood technology (recycled and renewable) used for interior trim
• Sugars made from corn, beet and cane under consideration for biodegradable plastic parts

On to the fun stuff - the food!  Besides dishes incorporating the sustainable materials Ford is using and researching, the meal was rounded out by locally sourced Michigan food products.  Below is a copy of our menu with the sustainable materials highlighted in green:

Salad Course:
Whole WHEAT Rolls
Local Baby Greens Salad with Hearts of PALM, Orange Segments, Red Onion Rings, and an Orange Poppy Seed Dressing
Baby DANDELION Salad with Shaved Onions, Cracked Black Pepper, Olive Oil and Vinegar
Michigan Asparagus Salad

Entrées:
Pan Seared Great Lakes Walleye with SWEET POTATO Hash
Wahtenaw County Organic Chicken with Locally Grown Shakti MUSHROOMS served with Brown RICE Pilaf mixed with CARROTS and CORN
4H Grand Champion Braised Beef with Grand Traverse Cabernet
Baby Michigan Potatoes with Michigan-Based Raclette Cheese
Steamed Local Vegetables
Buckwheat Alfredo made with Calder's Dairy Cream (Michigan Cheese Farm)

Dessert:
COCONUT Dessert
Raspberry Tarts
Michigan Grown Strawberry Rhubarb Crisp with Organic Streusel OATS Topping
Michigan Grown Blackberry Cheesecake Lollipops

As far as my highlights and lowlights.... I had always wanted to try dandelion greens but never had the nerve to just pluck them out of the yard (yes, our yard has plenty to pick from).  I found out I haven't been missing anything....they are way too bitter for me.  On the other hand the coconut/chocolate dessert was far from bitter - it was sweet and delicious.  It's a good thing that Ford is using the coconut shell to make sun visors and not the coconut meat...otherwise I would be constantly blinded by sun after polishing off my visor snack.

Disclosure: I was invited to participate in this program by Ford and Ogilvy PR. Ford Motor Company paid for my travel and accommodations at the event, I was not compensated in any other manner for my time. My opinions posted here are my own.

Forward with Ford in Dearborn

Back in January, I wrote about my trip to Ford for their Driving Green Technology event.  Now we're back again for "Forward with Ford" - a media program to explore global trends and issues facing consumers now and forward into the future.

This is our second day in Dearborn and I have learned so much to share with you.....but right now I am just exhausted!  I don't want to spoil too many of the highlights, but I have to say that meeting Ed Begley, Jr. was one of them.  Stay tuned for much more in the next few days.

In the meantime, you can follow along on Twitter:  #FordTrends

UPDATE:  Check out my post on Thrifty Jinxy "Be Green to Save Green (or How I got to Meet Ed Begley Jr. Thanks to Ford!)"

Stay Sun Safe this Summer - Sun Exposure Guidelines & Protection for Children

Earlier this year, the American Academy of Pediatrics released new guidelines for sun exposure in children and teens. See all of their 2011 Summer Safety Tips here. Some highlights are:

For infants, your best option is to cover their skin with lightweight clothing and shade their heads with wide-brimmed hats. If for any reason adequate protection from clothing and shade are not available, you can apply a minimal amount of suncreen (15 SPF or higher) to small areas, such as the face and back hands.

For older children, covering up with clothing is still the best bet. Encourage baseball-type hats with a large bill and sunglasses that provide 97% -100% protection against both UVA and UVB rays. Limit exposure during peak sun hours between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Apply sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher on both sunny AND cloudy days. Reapply sunscreen every two hours, or after swimming or sweating.

Help the GIVE HEALTH Program Provide Clean Drinking Water Around the World

P&G's GIVE HEALTH program works to provide clean drinking water to families in need.
P&G and the Children’s Safe Drinking Water Program (CSDW) are teaming up in the GIVE HEALTH program to provide clean drinking water to children in need by providing PUR packets in developing countries. These packets, developed by P&G and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, use some of the same ingredients as municipal water systems to remove pollutants from contaminated water. Since 2004, CSDW has provided more than 3 billion liters of water to children in need in over 60 countries.

Here are some global water facts:

  • Less than 1% of the world’s fresh water is readily accessible for direct human use.
  • Almost 1 billion people lack safe drinking water.
  • More than 1.4 billion children under age 5 die each year because of diarrheal
  • diseases associated with contaminated drinking water—more than HIV/AIDS and
  • malaria combined.
  • Every 20 seconds, a child in a developing country dies from a water-related illness.
  • Providing safe, clean, drinkable water can reduce deadly diseases by about 50%.
  • An American taking a 5-minute shower uses more water that the typical person
  • living in a developing country slum uses in a day.
  • Waterborne diseases remain the leading cause of illness and death in the
    developing world.

Tomorrow, June 5th, your Sunday newspaper will contain a P&G Brandsaver insert with coupons for many P&G products.  For each coupon you redeem, P&G will donate one day of water ($.02).
